With slightly less than a month until the biggest Dota event since The International, ESL have revealed the schedule and format for the group stages of the Frankfurt Major, to be played on the 13th and 14th of November.

A few days have passed since the qualifiers for the Frankfurt Major ended, and all of the participating teams confirmed. The latest announcement regarding the Frankfurt Major details; the dates and times that the group stages will be played has come. In addition, it was revealed that the GSL format will be used to determine the upper and lower Brackets before the main event begins on the 16th of November.

The group stages will be played on the 13th and 14th of November, from 11:00 to 00:00 CEST on both of these days. As with many major tournaments, these group stages occur before the main event itself. This is done in order to determine which teams will begin the main event in the upper bracket, and which teams will begin in the lower bracket.

This will be done through what is known as the GSL format. This means that the sixteen teams participating will first be divided into four groups. In each bracket, play will proceed as shown in the diagram below. In each case, the winner of the game is represented by a green arrow, and the loser by a red arrow.

This means that there will be a total of five best-of-three matches in each group. The winners of the first two games (Match 1 and Match 2 in the diagram) will compete against each other, with the winner of that game being placed directly into the winner’s bracket at the main event. The losers of the first two games (Match 1 and Match 2) will play against each other, with the loser being placed into the loser’s bracket at the main event. The loser of the Winner’s Match and the winner of the Loser’s Match will play the Decider’s Match. The winner of this final match will also be placed in the winner’s bracket, with the loser relegated to the loser’s bracket. When the group stages have been completed following this format, there will be eight teams in the upper bracket, and eight teams in the lower bracket.

The stage will then be set for the main event, taking place from the 16th to the 19th of November at the Festhalle Messe in Frankfurt. Whether you are able to watch the action in person at the stadium or from the comfort of your home, it will be a riveting few days of Dota. From the first game of the group stages to the grand final, there will be close games, throws, upsets, and memes galore. Be sure not to miss a moment!
