It is very well known that eSports have become a reliable source of income for professionals. Much like in sports, the earnings are based on success and the value of the tournament in which players and teams compete, disregarding the potential income of streaming and other activities.
This year we were witnessing the history in making. The largest prize pool in eSports history ($18,377,817.01) was distributed amongst 16 teams competing in the tournament, with EG taking the Grand Prize which was $6,616,014.12. Based on the amount of money the players gained through their career we can now name the highest earners in Dota 2 history.
Each year there is a change on the top of the highest earnings list. That is mostly because of The International and the prize money it offers. After this year´s International top 4 places on this list are held by EG members Saahil ‘UNiVeRsE’ Arora, Peter ‘ppd’ Dager, Kurtis ’Aui_2000’ Ling and Clinton ‘Fear’ Loomis while their newest and youngest member Syed ‘SumaiL’ Hassan holds 6th place just behind LGD's veteran Zhang ‘xiao8’ Ning. These six players have earned more than$1,600,000 each.
Closing the top 10 list are four Chinese players whose earnings exceed $1,000,000. Closest to the top 10 is Clement ‘Puppey’ Ivanov with a $910,816 earned throughout his Dota 2 career.Organisations
Gaming organizations, in most cases, have teams competing in most popular games. Na´Vi, for example, has teams competing in Dota 2, CS:GO, HotS and other popular games. The following rank list of organizations represents their earnings in Dota 2 and the number of tournaments their teams have participated in.
Even though most of these teams play other games besides Dota, most of their income comes through Dota. The leader, EG, earned 87.74% or $9,811,189 just from their Dota 2 division. The same can be applied to others, because in most cases more than 90% of total earnings come from Dota.
Countries
When it comes to countries, China is in a great lead. The reason behind that is their player pool, counting more than 150 professional players. The other reason is that Chinese have recognized the value of eSports long before the others. Their top 5 players have earned more than $1,000,000 each. Other countries with millionaires amongst their ranks are USA, Canada and Pakistan.
The numbers on this table represent a sum of their countries individual player’s earnings.
